History of the Destin Fishing Rodeo

The Destin Fishing Rodeo has been the cornerstone of the community since 1948. It all started when a group of local charter boat captains created the event to bring more visitors to Destin. Because this worked so well, the founders moved the Rodeo to the month of October to extend the tourist season another month. Before they knew it, what began as a small, friendly competition grew into the month-long extravaganza that attracts thousands of anglers and spectators each year.

In the past, Destin Fishing Rodeo prizes ranged from a new kitchen in 1948 to a brand new lot with the survey, title, and insurance in 1950. Now, prizes mostly include fishing gear, local weekend stays, and cash! In the upcoming years, the committee hopes to award boats, cars, and exotic fishing trips, so keep an eye out for tournament news and updates. The Destin Fishing Rodeo is a huge success for Destin, bringing income directly to the community and the charter boat industry. Whether you’re participating in the competition or just witnessing the excitement, you’re supporting local shops and restaurants by giving them a try during your stay!
